In a recent Forbes article by Tom Kemp, “When Virtualization Meets Mobile,” many challenges and solutions for mobile virtualization are discussed. Whether it is for security, privacy, or just the convenience of carrying only one device, mobile virtualization is certainly becoming a valid option. Still, mobile virtualization faces some challenges to becoming mainstream. The market, as well as the workforce, needs to be aware of such challenges.

We believe that a great mobile virtualization solution should:

Keep the device’s native performance (graphic, battery, CPU) on all personas and not only on the private persona.

Keep the native user-experience by allowing notifications, smart switching, links and sharing (when permitted), and the same look and feel of all personas.

Support more than two personas. Users can benefit from personas for their kids, gaming and social networks, in addition to their business and private personas. Why limit them to just two?

The virtualization solutions mentioned in the article are sluggish, and can host a different version of the operating system. This leads to a bad user experience, and is limited to two personas. Plus, running a full, extra operating system may consume more energy than only using one.

The other alternatives that were discussed in the article are containers and application wrappers. These solutions are having issues that weren’t explained such as:

You cannot wrap any application, especially the native ones (email, calendar) and apps that need direct hardware access (phone dialer, intense graphics using a graphics processing unit).

You cannot wrap third party apps – unless you strike a deal with the vendors and as a result, enterprises can’t take full advantage of the app selection in the market.

Containers require re-compilations of the apps with a special software development kit which enterprises try to avoid.

As a result, users are requested to use non-native apps, and the solutions are not as intuitive for the user. Cellrox can solve these real challenges with a virtualization technology that was designed and built for mobile from the ground up and addresses all of the issues mentioned above. No performance lost, full separation for security, native UX and multiple-personas (not just two), which can indeed achieve safe and easy-to use mobile virtualization. See a demo here!

Last week, in an effort to regain a solid foothold in the technology market, BlackBerry launched the new BB10, the company’s newest Smartphone platform. The launch revealed the platform’s built-in flagship feature called BlackBerry Balance™. The Balance feature provides a complete separation between work and personal use, integrated directly into the existing infrastructure of the phone. In addition, Balance enables a corporate IT or security department, using a remote management module, to erase corporate data if an employee loses his phone or no longer works for the company.

BlackBerry Balance marks a new era in Smartphone technology. Blackberry, a company that has dominated the enterprise market for so long, knows better than anyone what IT administrators need when it comes to mobile devices for corporate employees. With the development of Balance technology they have demonstrated their deep understanding of the necessity of Smartphone devices to provide a secure and easily- navigated separation between business and personal use.

Unfortunately for BlackBerry, they have missed the boat. In recent years iPhone and Android phones have come to dominate the market both in personal and corporate environments. But one thing is for sure – this technology is definitely a sign of what’s to come. I don’t know a single IT admin that wouldn’t want the features provided by the Balance on their company’s mobile devices. The time has come for the leading OEMs to realize this as well. And I say: the sooner the better!

Leader in Bring-Your-Own-Device Solutions Leverages Fixmo SafeZone to Offer Clean Separation Between Work and Personal Life on iPhone and iPad

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona—February 25, 2013—Cellrox, a leader in multi-persona solutions for mobile devices, today announced a partnership with Fixmo, a leader in mobile security and data protection solutions, to provide multi-persona services for iPhones and iPads brought into organizations through bring your own device (BYOD) arrangements. Cellrox will integrate the Fixmo SafeZone secure workspace solution into its Cellrox solution to enhance mobile security and privacy for enterprise IT departments and iOS users.

As the BYOD approach continues to proliferate, end users are looking for a greater sense of privacy and ownership over their personal information and device characteristics. At the same time, IT departments must ensure that business data and applications are password protected, governed by a set of corporate IT policies, and can be remotely locked or wiped without impacting the personal side of the device. Creating a clean separation between the two sides of the device—personal and business—is becoming increasingly important.

Cellrox provides an innovative multi-persona solution that enables mobile device users to switch seamlessly between business apps and personal apps with a simple swipe of the screen (see how the technology works here: http://www.cellrox.com/how-it-works/). Personal apps remain private to the user while policy controls and security settings over the business-related applications and data can be managed by IT departments. Cellrox recently introduced their solution for Android devices, and through the partnership with Fixmo, will now support iOS devices as well.

“We are thrilled to partner with Fixmo to extend our comprehensive and highly secure solution for BYOD to iOS devices,” said Omer Eiferman, CEO, Cellrox. “By bringing together best-of-breed solutions, our customers and partners can now embrace an end-to-end platform for BYOD security and management that offers complete separation of business and personal data across a wider range of smartphones and tablets.”

Fixmo is a leading provider of defense-grade mobile security and data protection solutions. Its innovative Fixmo SafeZone product is a powerful secure workspace solution that keeps all corporate email, browsing, documents and applications encrypted, contained and under IT control no matter who owns the device. It provides end-to-end FIPS 140-2 AES 256-bit encryption of all corporate data, strong authentication, secure access to enterprise systems, and custom IT policies that enable all business data to be wiped without impacting the personal side of the device.

“Fixmo SafeZone has received tremendous feedback from customers and partners for its innovative ‘secure workspace’ design that enables all business apps to work together within a highly secure, IT controlled sandbox environment without impacting the personal side of the device,” said Rick Segal, CEO, Fixmo. “Fixmo and Cellrox share a common vision of enabling organizations to embrace the full potential of enterprise mobility and BYOD without compromising security, compliance, or end-user experience. We’re very excited about the opportunity to go to market as technology partners.”

Mobile World Congress 2013
Hall 5 Stand 5I84

Tel Aviv, Israel, February 14, 2013 - Cellrox, a leader in bring-your-own-device (BYOD) Multi-Persona solutions for mobile devices, announced today that it will attend Mobile World Congress 2013 to demonstrate how it is addressing the BYOD challenges in enterprises with multi-persona technology, including successful tier one pilots and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) support.

Visitors to the Israeli Export Institute stand, Hall 5 Stand 5I84, will have a hands-on experience in Cellrox no compromise BYOD with full security and native performance.

“Multi-persona is a game changer for mobile security and privacy in the enterprise,” said Omer Eiferman, CEO of Cellrox. “With 72 percent of security breaches caused by users’ misbehavior and lack of boundaries between business and private assets/data, enterprises face serious challenges in managing access of employees to corporate resources via mobile devices.”

Cellrox multi-personal solution creates an impenetrable wall between the employee’s applications and the company’s data and applications, allowing one phone to co-host two or more completely independent and secure virtual environments.

Cellrox’ new Jade toolkit for Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) allows original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and carriers to embed the Cellrox Jade multi-persona capabilities in smartphones and tablets. Built on the award-winning ThinVisor framework, Cellrox Jade supports both IT deployments of corporate-owned mobile devices and BYOD environments, by running two separate personas – a private persona and a managed corporate persona – on the same device.

With a recent $4.7 million Series A financing led by international venture capital firm Runa Capital, Cellrox is extending its collaboration with OEMs and operators for installation in tier-one enterprises around the world.

Over the past couple years, I have had the opportunity to talk to all sorts of people about keeping work and personal life separate on their mobile phones. I’ve spoken with friends and friends of friends and spouses of friends; all shared the same frustration with the long password enforced on them, even when they just want to use the phone to text their friend or the inability to download and try any application they fancy, because they don’t comply with enterprise policy, some even had stories about camera taken out of their device. And so it happens that they all feel dissatisfied with the solutions provided by their employers and some of them even preferred to hold two devices. But one look at multi-persona application and they are all in agreement. “Here is a real answer to our problems!” (And if the person I’m taking to happens to be a parent this sentence is usually quickly followed by the question “Wait, could I use this to keep my children from deleting work on my phone?!?)

In today’s high-stress, fast-paced world, multi-tasking is the name of the game. So many of us find ourselves juggling several different areas of our lives, moving between the various roles we play. As smartphones grow more and more sophisticated, we depend on these devices to help us multi-task. On any given day we use our phones as communication devices, calendars, social networking hubs, information providers and, yes, even portable video game consoles. But the key to doing this successfully lies in your phone’s ability to make clear distinctions between the different contexts in which you use it. And if you’re like me and you dislike change, you need your device to do this without drastically altering the way you use it.

Current market research tells us that even enterprises are starting to understand the strategic benefit of using smartphones among their employees. This means that the degree to which each of us will use our phones for both business and pleasure is only going to increase. In turn, the need for our mobile devices to differentiate between work-related functions and personal use will also rise exponentially. The time has come for IT administrators to start giving serious consideration to multi-persona applications. A good multi-persona application needs to be well tailored to the device it is being used on. It should be able to switch seamlessly between personas while also maintaining the phone’s native performance. It should be reliable, safe, and easy to use, working in conjunction with the user’s prior knowledge of the device.

TEL AVIV, Israel, January 21, 2013 - Cellrox, a leader in BYOD Multi-Persona solutions for mobile devices, announced today the completion of Series A financing led by international venture capital firm Runa Capital.

The $4.7 million round also includes commitments from existing investors: Previz Venture Partners, Columbia Technology Ventures, and others.

Cellrox will use the financing to extend its collaboration with OEMs and operators for installation in tier-one enterprises around the world. Cellrox delivers the next generation of technology that enables employees and corporations to share a single fully functional mobile device without compromising security, performance or user experience.

By creating an impenetrable wall between the employee’s applications and the company’s data and applications, Cellrox focuses on proactive security and application transparency all in a single swipe– one phone, two or more personas. The company has a different approach to the BYOD market to allow one phone to co-host two or more completely independent and secure virtual environments that coexist on a single Android mobile device.

“We are pleased to complete this financing that will allow us to extend our capabilities and continue to deliver a leading BYOD solution for our partners and customers,” said Omer Eiferman, CEO of Cellrox. “We see a huge opportunity in 2013 due to the increased focus on mobile vulnerabilities, employee privacy and device performance.”

“Runa Capital DNA includes strong virtualization experiences and practical delivery from technology to a leading product. It is rare to find a VC team with such extraordinary experience in technology and products in our domain,” Eiferman added.

“Cellrox solutions have been successfully installed in tier-one enterprises worldwide and continue to see a strong demand for mobile virtualization and multi-persona capabilities, particularly with the business/private use-case,” said Dmitry Chikhachev, managing partner at Runa Capital. “The future for mobile virtualization is even broader compared to servers and desktop virtualization. Cellrox technology is positioned to be the winner.”
